On-Campus Employment Process for International Students

All students must have a valid Social Security Number (SSN) issued by the United States Social Security Administration in order to work and BEFORE starting work on campus.

Please follow these steps:

  1. Search & Apply for jobs on Handshake or Interstride, a career preparation platform that supports international students and alumni in job searching and networking, as well as at every step from admission to graduation.
(Note: Central’s ISSS office is the primary resource for international students to receive resources and advice about OPT/CPT and other sponsorship-related questions. Handshake and Interstride are to be utilized in conjunction with ISSS and the Career Development Office.)
  2. Search & Apply in person: Since some Central offices do not post on Handshake, visit the different offices on campus that interest you and ask them directly if they are hiring any non-work study positions. If they are, apply!
  3. Prepare & Interview well to secure on-campus employment. You will need to submit a resume, and if you need assistance in preparing your application or sharpening your interview skills, book an appointment with a staff member in the Career Development Office.
  4. Get a letter: Obtain a hire letter from the on-campus hiring department supervisor or manager.
  5. Secure a social security card: Apply for a social security card online at: https://www.ssa.gov/ . Once you complete your application (online or in person), your card should be received within 7-10 business days and mailed to the address you provided on your application.

If you need any assistance with these procedures, the Center for International Education, International Student and Scholar Services, and Career Development Office are happy to help.
