A busy 'News' day

Published: October 04, 2018

CCSU hosted a panel discussion in Founders Hall on Oct. 2 as part of National News Engagement Day, an annual event that encourages engagement with the news and promotes education on the principles and processes of journalism in a democratic society.

Stan Simpson, Robert C. Vance Endowed Chair in Journalism and Mass Communication, moderated the discussion, which explored the implications of the anonymous op-ed in the New York Times written by a White House staffer; Bob Woodward’s new book, “Fear”; and other issues related to journalism responsibility.

Panelists included Carol Giacomo, a member of the New York Times Editorial Board; Matthew Kaufman, a Hartford Courant Investigative Desk reporter; Carolyn Lumsden, the Opinion editor at the Courant; and Jacqueline Smith, an Editorial Page editor at the New York Times.
