This new area in the micro and nano regime is rife with the need for analytical skills and application of physics for understanding and elucidation. In the nano regime the well-known classical laws of physics and its applied derivatives at the macro scale often do not hold, and so the need and for quantum physics and its application. Physicists are thus being sought at the frontiers of the study of biological systems in research and development, in nanotechnology, biotechnology and in the medical field. In addition to the traditional career of physicists in research, education, and engineering, students with these concentrations will be better prepared to participate in cutting edge research in biological systems as biophysicists, do graduate studies in nanotechnology, biophysics, biotechnology, provide a new cadre of medical students and practitioners well equipped to tackle some of the tough questions requiring significant analytical and critical thinking skills to help come up with new solutions to improve the human condition. In medical education, physics majors have consistently outperformed almost all other majors in medical school entry test, the MCAT. Physics: Biomolecular Science Concentration BS Undergraduate Degree Programs The role of Physics in Biological Sciences has become even more critical in recent years. With the discovery and invention of instrumentation to study matter at the micro and nano levels such as the Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) in 1982, and the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) in 1989, a very large area of biological systems have now been opened up for study and application. Physics: Engineering Physics Concentration BS Undergraduate Degree Programs This program is directed toward students who will like a very strong grounding in physics and mathematics as well as the applied laboratory and practical hands-on skills of engineering. Engineering Physics might seem “like someone’s idea of a cruel joke – combining two of the toughest majors into one” according to Princeton Review, but goes on to say “no pain, no gain, my friend! And gains come in the form of a wide blanket of job opportunities...” This program provides students with strong unparalleled analytical and problem solving skills as well as a hands-on engineering environment. It prepares students to tackle challenges in Science and Engineering, and to work at the cutting edge of research and development. Students from this program, in addition to the traditional career of physicists in research, education, and engineering, can do graduate studies in physics and/or engineering, work at the forefront of science, technology, research and development in academia and in high tech industries such as in aerospace, photonics, renewable energy systems, in the development of next generation photovoltaics, fuel cells, etc. They may also pursue careers in medical physics, medicine, law etc. In addition to the basic engineering courses, the program is designed with free engineering electives that allow students to choose a focus in aerospace, materials, or civil engineering. A Robotics & Mechatronics concentration is still being worked out. Physics: Finance Concentration BS Undergraduate Degree Programs Physics, finance and economics have had a long history together. A number of theories used in Finance and Economics were derived by physicists. For example, a co-recipient of the first Nobel Prize in Economic Science in 1969 was Jan Tinbergen, a physicist who trained under Paul Ehrenfest. Today, the world of Finance and Economics, from Wall Street to Insurance companies, seeks physicists and others with strong analytical skills, known as quants, to fill their need for quantitative analysis. James Harris Simons of Chern-Simons theory fame, is the founder of Renaissance Technologies, the company whose Medallion Fund is said to be one of the most successful hedge fund of all time, and mainly hired physicists, mathematicians and computer scientists. The power and role of these physicists and their compatriots have been discussed and written about in books, for example, My Life as a Quant: Reflections on Physics and Finance, by Emmanuel Derman, Wiley & Sons Pub. (2007). The New York Times, describes them as “experts in mathematics, physics and computer science who brought sophisticated quantitative approaches to the world of Wall Street”. In addition to the traditional career of physicists in research, education, and engineering, students with these concentrations will be better prepared to work in financial institutions, or do graduate studies in Finance, Economics, and Law, thus providing a wider array of options to them. For example, in the Law School entrance exams, the LSAT, physics majors have consistently been top performers. Polish Studies Minor Minor 6 credits of Polish language, unless waived by the Modern Language Department.
