CCSU hosted its annual Veterans Day Observance on Nov. 12 at Alumni Hall, with several state and local dignitaries in attendance; among them, U.S. Sen. Richard D. Blumenthal; U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty, CCSU President Zulma R. Toro; and Connecticut State Colleges and Universities President Mark Ojakian.
In her remarks, Toro noted, “On this day, we honor those who have served in the United States military. Veterans serve in several capacities all over the world, in wartime and in times of peace. … But they all share one important thing in common: they made it their duty to protect and defend the values of this country.
“Today, we recognize their achievements; we reflect on their stories of sacrifice; and, most important, we thank them for their service.”
The Office of Veterans Affairs recognized three veterans with awards for public service and excellence. John E. “Jack” Truhan received the CCSU Veterans Public Service Award for Excellence; CCSU student Joshua Barnett received the Student Veteran Award for Excellence; and CCSU student Mike Curiel was awarded the CCSU Great Elm VFW Post 9945 Wethersfield Veterans Scholarship.
