Student named to Central Regional Tourism District

Jamie Bonito, a junior majoring in marketing and management, recently earned some extra credit of sorts for smart networking.

When the Windsor Locks Board of Selectmen issued a call on Facebook for representatives to the state’s Central Regional Tourism District, Bonito, a longtime Windsor Locks resident, quickly responded. As a student with an interest tourism marketing, Bonito says the position struck her as a good opportunity.

The Central Regional Tourism District is one of three districts in the state that promote the vacation and sight-seeing opportunities for visitors to the region. The Central District covers the Massachusetts border to Hartford and the areas along the Connecticut River to New Haven and its neighboring shoreline towns.

Connecticut, as it turns out, could use some marketing help, according to Bonito, who cited a recent survey that placed Connecticut at number 44 out of the 50 states that people want to visit.

“I love to travel, tourism, and Connecticut, and I think there are a lot of great things in this state that aren’t necessarily brought forward to people,” Bonito says.

Bonito was sworn in as a representative to the District on Dec. 14 after winning unanimous approval from the Board of Selectmen. She will serve a one-year term.

“As soon as she was interviewed, I knew we had found the right person and recommended her to the Board of Selectmen,” says First Selectman J. Christopher Kervick. “Her dual major was a good fit, but what really impressed me was her enthusiasm and maturity. She quickly understood how this position could be helpful in furthering some of the economic development efforts taking place in Windsor Locks.”
