Professor Farhat completed a Ph.D. in Financial Economics with a major in Corporate Finance and Investments from the University of New Orleans in 2004. During his Ph.D. studies, he was awarded the Toussaint Hocevar Outstanding Ph.D. Student Award for his academic achievements.
Professor Farhat currently works as a Professor of Finance and Department Chair at Connecticut State University (CCSU). Prior to joining CCSU, his previous work experience included roles as an Assistant Professor of Finance at Southern Connecticut State University; Investment Consultant for the Social Security Investment Commission in Jordan, Assistant Professor at the Hashemite University, Jordan; Adjunct Professor of Financial Economics at the University of Jordan; and Academic Computing Statistical Consultant for the University of New Orleans. Since joining CCSU in 2006, Professor Farhat placed on the CCSU Excellence in Teaching Honor Roll in 2007, 2008, 2009 (Finalist), 2010 (Finalist), 2012, 2013 (Semifinalist), 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. He was also the recipient of the 2011 CSUS Board of Trustees Teaching Award.
Professor Farhat’s research interests are corporate finance, entrepreneurial finance, entrepreneurship, complex samples analyses and quantitative finance. Professor Farhat’s research has been published in many renowned academic journals, such as Small Business Economics, Review of Financial Economics, Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting, Journal of Economics and Finance, Managerial Finance, Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship, Journal of Insurance Issues, and Financial Decisions. Since he joined CCSU in 2006, he has successfully published 19 peer-reviewed articles, 13 web publications, two book chapters, and one book. He has also delivered 30 peer-reviewed presentations at national and international academic conferences. Professor Farhat is the Principal Investigator and lead Statistical Consultant for the Kauffman Firm Survey database. His work in the area of entrepreneurship has been cited in many popular academic journals and financial publications on numerous occasions.
Professor Farhat is the Founder and Editor of the Banking and Finance Review (BFR), a bi-annual, peer-reviewed international research journal that provides a publication outlet for theoretical and empirical issues in the fields of banking and finance. Sponsored by the Department of Finance at CCSU, the Banking and Finance Review is abstracted/indexed in BASE, Cabell's, EBSCO, E-JEL, ECONIS, EconLit, Intute, OAH, Scientific Commons, Scopus, Scopus Journal Metrics, Scientific Journal Rankings (SJR), The National Science Digital Library, and Ulrich’s Periodical.
Professor Farhat also serves as an external reviewer of research and scholarship for the promotion and tenure committees at national and international Universities and as external program evaluator for Business / Finance programs. Furthermore, he acts as a peer reviewer for many of the leading academic journals, including the Journal of Business Venturing, Small Business Economics , Journal of Economics and Finance, The Journal of Urban Economics, Journal of Managerial Finance, Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting, Journal of Energy Economics, the European Journal of Finance, and Review of Financial Economics.
Professor Farhat is a member of many of the prestigious professional societies related to his field of excellence including Professional Risk Managers International Association (PRMIA), Financial Management Association International (FMA), Eastern Finance Association (EFA), Southwestern Finance Association (SWFA), Southern Finance Association (SFA), Midwest Finance Association (MFA), and the Academy of Management (AOM).
