Prof. Fuentes has a BA in educational psychology from the National University of Mexico, a PhD in Spanish Linguistics, and a graduate certificate in education from the University of Pittsburgh.  Her dissertation examined the way in which the model of intercultural education was defined by Mexican educational authorities and was interpreted and implemented by ethnic and linguistic minorities.

Currently, Prof. Fuentes is the coordinator of the Foreign Language Teacher Education and Outreach program at Central Connecticut State University. Her research focuses on the policies of intercultural education in Mexico, educational discourse analysis, and the acquisition of intercultural skills by foreign language learners and teachers.
